PBI Guatemala Project

Peace Brigades International (PBI) is a non-governmental organization (NGO), that fields teams of international accompaniers / observers in areas of conflict. The objective of PBI's presence is to protect the political space of human rights defenders and other civil society activists that suffer repression for their nonviolent work in favour of human rights, peace, and social justice.

We currently maintain a team of 10 full time volunteers in Guatemala City, supported by an international committee and our international support network.

You can find more about the history of the Guatemala Project here.

Project Focus

Due to the complexity of the human rights situation, and the high demand for international accompaniment, presence, and observation, among human rights defenders, we have identified three fundamental themes which provide a medium term focus for the project.

Who we work with

We accompany several social movements, among which we highlight: those searching for the truth about Guatemala's civil war, for compensation, reconstruction and respect for it's victims, those who are fighting against the repression of human rights defenders, and those raising issues concerning environmental degredation and access to land.

Volunteer with us

Become an international observer that works for the protection of human rights defenders in Guatemala.

Donate

Since the Guatemala Project was restarted in 2003, the project has produced a Monthly Information Package detailing the team's activities, alongside a quarterly bulletin which deals in greater depth with the issues affecting Guatemalan human rights defenders.
