Protection needs of human rights defenders in Africa

Kenya

In response to the precarious situation for human rights defenders in Kenya, in 2011/12 PBI undertook an in-depth assessment to determine whether we could establish a field project there.

We went to Kenya to talk to human rights defenders. We wanted to find out what their protection needs were, and whether protective accompaniment would be effective in the country. We decided that we will take steps to establish a short-term project in Kenya in 2012/13, to provide support and protection to defenders during a period of expected heightened risk during the March 2013 presidential elections.

Background: PBI in Africa

Since 1981, Peace Brigades International (PBI) has protected human rights defenders and other organisations in many different countries to allow them greater freedom to work. Despite the precarious situation for human rights defenders in many parts of the continent, PBI has never established a field project in Africa.

In 2009/10 we assessed the protection needs of human rights defenders across Africa to identify countries where PBI’s methodology of international protective accompaniment may be appropriate. The research pointed to a clear demand from defenders in Kenya.

What they say

"International accompaniment is very important, because powerful interests will think twice before trying to attack us. There are always people on the street corners spying on us to watch our movements. When they see that internationals are entering our offices, this helps us tremendously. "
Aura Elena Farfán, Guatemalan Families of the Disappeared, Guatemala City (Guatemala)

PBI Nepal Impunity Publication - May 2011

The culture of impunity in Nepal related to conflict-era crimes continues and affects present-day access to justice. There is an absence of rule of law in many areas and rising insecurity as a result. Human rights defenders working against impunity or within this environment are made vulnerable. Here PBI-Nepal's partners and volunteers describe the situation and the effects on human rights defenders.
