> Indonesia

Protective accompaniment is a strategy pioneered by PBI for protecting human rights defenders and communities whose lives and work are threatened by political violence.

PBI has protected the lives of hundreds of activists, proving that accompaniment deters violence and creates space for local activists to work.

PBI sends volunteers to areas of conflict to provide protective accompaniment to human rights defenders.

PBI is a nonpartisan organization that does not interfere in the affairs of the accompanied human rights defenders.

PBI is an international NGO that has been promoting nonviolence and protecting human rights since 1981.

Suspicious death of Journalist Adriansyah Matrais

Peace Brigades International Indonesia Project is saddened to inform you that Adriansyah Matrais a member of Foker (Forum Kerja Lembaga Sosial Masyarakat, NGO working forum) has died under suspicious circumstances.

Indonesia Project

The PBI Indonesia Project (IP) provides protective accompaniment services and peace education workshops to local groups in Indonesia upon request.

PBI began working in Indonesia in 1999 when conflicts led to invitations for a PBI presence by local groups and the National Human Rights Commission.

PBI protects the work of local civil society organisations so that they can look for solutions to conflicts in their country.

We do not intend to substitute for local groups, but rather to give space and support for their work.

This project is closed

Peace Brigades International (PBI) has closed its current phase of operations in Indonesia as a result of a series of challenges and constraints during the past year.

Our departure means the withdrawal of the last international human rights organisation from Papua after other organisations have had their operations disrupted.

The website is an archive from late 2010.
