PBI makes a difference
In the first half of 2007, there were 89 attacks against human rights defenders in Guatemala, according to the National Human Rights Movement. Human Rights Watch states that "impunity remains the rule when it comes to human rights abuses". These are the treacherous conditions in which Dominga Vasquez works to promote the rights of women and indigenous people. Public appreciation of her hard work was recognized when she was elected as the first female Indigenous Mayor of Solola. PBI began accompanying Dominga in February 2005. As part of the PBI team, Helen Woodcock provides an international protective accompaniment to Dominga, putting her own personal safety at risk. The physical presence and support of international volunteers such as Helen empowers human rights activists to defend their rights with less fear of violence or reprisals.
