In February 1997, PBI-NAP was invited to come to Big Mountain by the Sovereign Dineh Nation, a group
of Dineh living around Big Mountain who are resisting relocation. A team of NAP volunteers responded
with a two week exploratory visit to the Big Mountain area in May 1997. The volunteers met with Dineh
and Hopi elders, members of the Tribal Councils and agencies, and business representatives in the area.
The team's objective was to introduce PBI to the people involved in the conflict, learn more about the
issues, provide non-violence training and recommend further courses of action for PBI in the future.
This is the Dineh community of Teesto, which is located on the Hopi Partitioned Lands. Many of the Dineh families in Teesto refuse to sign the Accommodation Agreement and refuse to relocate. NAP is currently preparing for a second visit to Big Mountain to see if Peace Brigades can be of any assistance in providing a space for peaceful resolution.
