In 1995, there were a number of incidents that deepened Nawash fears that the angler lobby is trying to limit
the exercise of their fishing rights. Two Nawash fishing boats were sunk, one later torched, thousands of
metres of their fishing nets were lost to apparent vandalism, and a violent attack on a group of Nawash
youth in Owen Sound took place amidst calls by the anglers for restrictions on Nawash fishing.
NAP returned to the Bruce Peninsula area in December 1996, this time in response to a request by the Nawash's sister community, the Saugeen, who were experiencing similar problems over their rights to commercial fishing. Two volunteers remained in the area until March 1997, conducting interviews and documenting the situation.
