One part of the conflict involves Mary and Carrie Dann, Western Shoshone ranchers. They are in conflict with non-native ranchers, the US Bureau of Land Management and law enforcement agencies over the use of public lands. The Dann sisters claim the right to graze their cattle on public land, which they regard as their land. There is also the issue of potential environmental contamination owing to gold mining on Shoshone territory. This is Carrie Dann with NAP volunteer Alain Richard.

In March 1995, a NAP team returned to the area to conduct a non-violence training for the Western Shoshone Defence Project, a mostly non-native support and advocacy group for the Western Shoshone.
