One of the greatest threats to the traditional Innu way of life is the low-level military flight training carried
out by NATO allies, by invitation from Canada’s federal government. The war practice area covers most
of the interior of Nitassinan’s hunting territory. The Innu have struggled nonviolently against this testing in many ways,
including occupying the airstrips and bombing ranges used by the planes. Not only is the presence of the
Canadian, British, Dutch, German and other military seen as an infringement of their territorial rights, the
planes are also disruptive to their hunting and damaging to the environment.
