NAP sent its first team to Davis Inlet at the request of the Innu in December 1993. This woman, Chief
Katie Rich, along with a group of Innu women, had asked the visiting judge and police to leave their
community as they felt Canadian law was inappropriate and harmful to them. An angry crowd eventually
evicted the judge and police from the community, but the provincial government threatened to send the
police back and the Innu were afraid of a violent confrontation.
