Who we protect

PBI UK volunteer protecting Tita Radilla Martinez, who works for The Association of Family Members of the Disappeared in Mexico.

Whenever there is conflict, poverty and repression, there will always be brave people who will stand up for the rights and dignity of their communities because they believe in peace and justice for all. Peace Brigades International exists solely to support these courageous people in their struggle.

Those we protect and support include human rights lawyers, indigenous community leaders, environmentalists, families of the ‘disappeared’ and displaced communities.

They all have two things in common.

Firstly they are all key members of civil society whose work has the potential to bring about the long-term development of democratic civil society and ultimately peace. Secondly, that as a result of their work, their lives are under threat and it would be simply too risky to continue without the visible support and international spotlight that PBI brings. They would otherwise be forced into exile, risk ‘disappearance’ or at least their space for action would be drastically reduced.
